Baby Care
Baby cares can include anything from as small as choosing the right crib to first aid treatment in the case of an injury. Informed parents who learn these baby caring techniques will be better prepared to provide superior care to their infant.
Despite a parent’s best efforts, small injuries and problems are part of an infant’s life. When a baby receives an injury, however small, treatment methods should be known by knowledgeable parents. In the case of caring for baby scrapes and contusions, the wound should be washed with soap and warm water, dried, an antibiotic ointment applied, and then covered with a bandage. If the cut appears to be serious or infected, a local pediatrician should be contacted. For burns, an ice pack should not be applied as it can damage the skin tissue. Rather, caring for babies should include petroleum jelly and then a bandage wrapping.
Because a baby is not able to speak, other methods of communicating the baby cares are needed. One such way is by paying close attention to the texture, color, and regularity of an infant’s bowel movements. After the first week, the baby’s bowel movements should be in liquid or paste consistency and should be either. If the baby is not having regular bowel movements, it may be suffering from infant constipation. A warm bath may help to relieve this condition. Also, stomach massages are another way of caring for babies. The baby’s abdominal area should be rubbed in a clockwise motion outward starting from the belly button.
As a baby will spend much of its first few months in a crib, caring for baby needs should include choosing the right crib. First and foremost, a crib needs to have passed any and all safety regulations. In addition, the crib should be very stable as the infant will kick and move more as it grows. There should be no excessive spacing between slats as an infant could trap its head. An adjustable mattress height is another aspect that needs to be considered. As the infant grows, the mattress will need to be lowered to prevent the baby from falling over the top. Before the crib is ever used, care should be taken to inspect the bedding to make sure there are no possible splinters, sharp points, or anything else that may cause bodily harm to the infant.
By learning about various infant ailments and ways to both prevent and treat them, parents will be able to provide a better living environment for their child. The plethora of baby cares can seem to be endless, but this knowledge is essential as a basis of good and effective baby caring.
